Death of a Tool

Death of a Tool

Rarely have I had tool failures, but this week has been an exception. Monday night I had a Dremel rotary tool die an ignoble death. Monday afternoon I went by Lowe’s to pick up some cut off wheels and saw the new quick change kits and picked one up for a little more than $20.  Monday night I chucked in my new cut off wheel system and started cutting an aluminum rail from a storm door. The tool didn’t like it one bit, as it began to bog down, I would back off the pressure.  The tool kept catching in the previously cut space and after about three times there was a puff of smoke and the Dirge played for the tool.  Tuesday I went back to Lowe’s and picked up some new motor brushes from Lowe’s for  around $3. New Sweepstakes Announced Win a Bosch Pocket Driver

MY buddy Rob over at the Concord Carpenter is giving away a Bosch Pocket Driver. These are neat tools. The Pocket Driver is a professional version of the mini drivers made by various other companies, but Bosch built this one to stand up to commercial use and has a neat ratcheting feature that allows the user to torque the fastener just like a socket wrench. I use mine for cabinet assembly and also for everyday maintenance.  To register for the Bosch Pocket Driver go here.

Celebrate Earth Day

I have never been accused of being a tree hugger, but I do love trees and wood and I spent much of my time in the outdoors. For eight years my Boy Scout Troop wrapped seedlings for distribution. Each year we would wrap 1500 Bald Cypress and various other hardwoods.  Well today is Earth Day and we are featuring Western Dovetail and its commitment to being a good steward of our resources. Check out its page here.

Laying Out Ceramic Tiles/Tiling a Sunroom with Porcelain Tile Update Number Two

Laying Out Ceramic Tiles/Tiling a Sunroom with Porcelain Tile Update Number Two
Several factors affect tile layout. My suggestion is before installing the tile permanently, do a dry run. Lay out the tiles, dry(using no mortar) to see what works best for you. In large areas I usually use a focal point as my center, but if the focal point method causes me to have a small perimeter tile, I make adjustments.  The focal point in the sun-room is the fireplace, so I used it as my center line originally.  Here are some helpful drawings created from information in Craftsman’s Construction Installation Encyclopedia.
